Declined means the charge attempt wasn't approved: the issuing bank, the card network, or the security checks declined the operation. No money moved — not for you and, under normal conditions, not for the customer either.
Common causes
- Insufficient funds or card limit reached.
- Incorrect details: card number, expiration date, or security code.
- The issuing bank declined based on its own risk policies.
- 3DS authentication wasn't completed.
- Anti-fraud checks detected risk signals.
What you can do
- Review the reason: the payment details show the general cause of the decline. That guides your recommendation to the customer.
- Suggest a retry: if it was a data entry error or a funds issue, the customer can try again with the correct details or another card.
- Offer another method: bank transfer or cash often unblocks sales when the card keeps failing.
What to recommend to the buyer
To check their details and their balance and, if everything looks right, to contact their bank: most declines are decided by the issuer, and only the bank can confirm the exact reason.
Possible next status
Declined is a final status: that operation won't be reactivated. A new attempt by the customer creates a separate operation, with its own ID and its own lifecycle.
