A chargeback doesn't just put the sale amount at stake: the dispute can involve other movements in your account. Knowing them helps you gauge the real impact and make a better-informed decision about whether to accept or respond to each case.
Who this applies to
Accounts that receive disputes on card payments. Chargebacks are initiated by the buyer's bank; Conekta manages the process and reflects the movements in your account.
The components of the cost
- Disputed amount: when the chargeback is opened, the sale amount is held or deducted from your balance for as long as the dispute lasts.
- Operational dispute charge: depending on the current policy in your commercial agreement, a charge for handling the chargeback may apply, regardless of the outcome.
- Fee on the original sale: the fee on the disputed payment is usually not returned, because the processing already took place.
What happens depending on the outcome
- If you win the dispute: the held amount returns to your balance in the days following the resolution.
- If the chargeback is upheld: the disputed amount is permanently deducted and the movement is recorded in your reports.
What happens next
All the dispute's movements are identified in your reports and in your payout details. If you received a dispute, start with How to respond to a chargeback and evaluate your evidence before the deadline.
