A chargeback's status summarizes what stage of the process the dispute is in and what you need to do. A chargeback moves in only one direction: it's received, it's responded to or accepted, and it ends up won or lost.

The statuses and what to do in each one

  • Received: the buyer's bank opened the dispute and the amount is withheld from your balance. Review the case details as soon as possible.
  • Awaiting response: the case is waiting for your decision: accept the chargeback or submit evidence. It's the only stage in which you can act, and it has a deadline.
  • Submitted (under review): your evidence has been presented to the bank and the case is in the hands of the card network. No action is required; just wait for the resolution.
  • Accepted: you decided not to dispute the charge, or the deadline passed without a response. The withheld funds are permanently returned to the buyer.
  • Won: the bank ruled in your favor. The withheld amount returns to your balance.
  • Lost: the bank ruled in favor of the buyer. The withdrawal of funds becomes permanent.

Next step

If you have a case in Awaiting response, first review the full details and decide calmly — but before the deadline — whether to accept or respond.
